Teasing Master Takagi-san

Teasing Master Takagi-san (からかい上手の高木さん, Karakai Jōzu no Takagi-san, lit. "Good at Teasing, Miss Takagi") is a Japanese manga series by Sōichirō Yamamoto. The series features the daily life of Takagi, who loves to tease her classmate Nishikata, and Nishikata's failed attempts to get back at her. An anime television series adaptation by Shin-Ei Animation aired from January 8 to March 26, 2018. An OVA was released on July 12, 2018.[4] An English adaptation of the manga was released on July 24, 2018 under the title Teasing Master Takagi-san. A second season aired from July 7 to September 22, 2019.

Plot

Middle school students Nishikata and Takagi sit next to each other in class. Takagi, who likes Nishikata, enjoys teasing him with embarrassing pranks and jokes. In response, Nishikata creates plans to get his revenge, but they always fail when she identifies his weaknesses and capitalizes on them.

Manga

Teasing Master Takagi-san is written by Sōichirō Yamamoto. The series began serialization in Shogakukan's shōnen manga magazine supplement Monthly Shōnen Sunday Mini on June 12, 2013,[10] and it moved to the main Monthly Shōnen Sunday magazine on July 12, 2016.[11] As of December 2019, it has been collected in twelve tankōbon volumes.

In North America, Yen Press has licensed the manga.[2]

A spin-off manga series titled Ashita wa Doyōbi (あしたは土曜日, lit. "Tomorrow is Saturday") was serialized in the newspaper Yomiuri Chuukousei Shinbun between November 2014 and November 2015, and was collected in two tankōbon volumes. It was also adapted within the Karakai Jōzu no Takagi-san adaptation in 2018.[8] A third series titled Karakai Jōzu no (Moto) Takagi-san (からかい上手の（元）高木さん, lit. "Teasing Master (Former) Takagi-san") featuring an adult Takagi, now married to Nishikata, and their daughter, Chi, debuted in 2017. It has been collected in seven tankōbon volumes. A second spin-off manga series titled Koi ni Koisuru Yukari-chan (恋に恋するユカリちゃん) debuted in 2017.

An anime television series adaptation was announced in the August issue of Shogakukan's Monthly Shōnen Sunday magazine.[48] The series was directed by Hiroaki Akagi at Shin-Ei Animation with scripts written by Michiko Yokote and character designs by Aya Takano. It aired from January 8 to March 26, 2018 on Tokyo MX and other channels.[5][49] Crunchyroll simulcast the series, while Funimation streamed the series with an English dub.[50] The series ran 12 episodes.[51] The opening theme is "Iwanai Kedo ne." (言わないけどね。) performed by Yuiko Ōhara.[49] For ending themes, Rie Takahashi performs covers of previously-existing songs: "Kimagure Romantic" (気まぐれロマンティック) by Ikimono-gakari (episodes 1–2), "AM11:00" by HY (ep. 3–4),[52] "Bicycle" (自転車, Jitensha) by Judy and Mary (ep. 5–6),[53] "Kaze Fukeba Koi" (風吹けば恋) by Chatmonchy (ep. 7–8),[54] "Chiisana Koi no Uta" (小さな恋のうた) by Mongol800 (ep. 9–10),[55] "Ai Uta" (愛唄) by Greeeen (ep. 11),[56] and "Deatta Koro no Yō ni" (出逢った頃のように) by Every Little Thing (ep. 12).[57] An OVA episode was bundled with the manga's 9th volume which was released on July 12, 2018.[4]

On January 10, 2019, it was announced that the series would receive a second season;[58] the staff and cast reprised their respective roles. It aired from July 7 to September 22, 2019,[59] with episodes being exclusively streamed on Netflix in Japan; a worldwide release on Netflix took place on December 6.[9][60] The opening theme for the second season is "Zero Centimeters" (ゼロセンチメートル, Zero Senchimētoru) performed by Ōhara.[61] Like with the first season, the ending songs consist of covers by Takahashi: "Kanade" (奏（かなで）) by Sukima Switch (ep. 1),[62] "Konayuki" (粉雪) by Remioromen (ep. 2),[63] "Kiseki" (キセキ) by Greeeen (ep. 3–4),[64] "Arigatō" (ありがとう) by Ikimono-gakari (ep. 5–6),[65] "STARS" by Mika Nakashima (ep. 7),[66] "Anata ni" (あなたに) by Mongol800 (ep. 8–9),[67] "Iwanai Kedo ne." by Ōhara (ep. 10–11),[68] and "Yasashii Kimochi" (やさしい気持ち) by Chara (ep. 12).[69]

Reception

By December 2016, the manga had over 1 million copies in print.[70] By February 2018, that number had increased to 4 million copies.[71] As of February 2019, the manga has 6 million copies in print.[72]

The manga was nominated for the 10th Manga Taishō awards in January 2017.[73]
