When Rebus starts at Summerhill police station and is "learning the ropes" from Detective Inspector Stefan Gilmour, he realised that Gilmour’s dead hero Charlie Cruikshank has suppressed evidence that could have exonerated Joseph Blay, who was hanged. But Rebus said to Gilmour that he will not take the matter to "The Complaints" as "what good would that do?". So Gilmour says "Welcome to the Saints of the Shadow Bible, John" and after a moment’s hesitation Rebus returns the handshake.[4]
