At the time of the 2011 Census of India, 79.74% of the population in the district spoke Hindi (including 48.45% Kumaoni and 1.61% Garhwali), 16.62% Urdu, 2.06% Punjabi, 0.63% Nepali and 0.44% Bengali as their first language.
