A ruckman, Purser was a premiership player with East Fremantle in 1979. He joined Footscray in 1983 and played with the club for five seasons. In just his second season, he won the Charles Sutton Medal for Footscray's best and fairest player.
After 112 VFL games, Purser returned to Western Australia, a state he represented at interstate football, and finished his career with a brief stint at West Perth. He decided to retire at just 28 years of age.
